They told my husband and I that our son was different and may never do things like other kids. We refused to accept it!
We were determined to prove them wrong and make sure our son J.R. never heard the words “can’t do” as we helped to support him on his journey to what he can do.
J.R. will finish his Junior year in high school and he has thrived every day. Last year he was officially dismissed from Special Education (SPED) and, though it’s been challenging at times, J.R. has surpassed everything we were told he could not do.
J.R. gave a speech on Autism Awareness in front of our entire city council and meeting attendees. Our city recognized and honored him and his autism advocacy. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The last sentence of his speech was…
I’m not done I’m just getting started.”
It was a reminder that an autistic person is capable of growing, learning, and achieving. The only thing that hinders them are people who think that thinks they “can’t.”
J.R. has truly been a blessing and, in so many ways, our miracle. As a family, we work together to make sure our city is fully aware of and understands autism. Awareness leads to acceptance. We will never stop speaking out for all children on the spectrum and their families. no one should ever feel alone!
