Bringing together pop-culture and technology, it was about time that Silicon Valley hosted a Comic Con event.

If you don’t know what a Comic Con is, where have you been? It began in 1970 when 100 comics, movie and science fiction fans wanted to come together to celebrate what they loved with their like-minded peers. Today, it’s a massive cultural gathering in San Diego attracting over 125,000. It sells out within minutes. People come to see their favorite stars in sci-fi, comics and fantasy genres but more importantly, they come to BE the stars of their own imaginations for one glorious weekend.

We live in the San Francisco Bay Area and one day I spotted a billboard announcing an inaugural Silicon Valley Comic Con presented by Steve Wozniak.

“When I was growing up it was hard to be a geek,” said the Woz. “It definitely wasn’t cool back then, but I am happy that things have changed because now being a geek, or being different is cool.  And Silicon Valley Comic Con celebrates BEING A GEEK!”

I knew that this was an opportunity I wanted our #BluebeeTeeVee team, Jonathan and James, to experience. I applied for press badges and asked the duo to represent Geek Club Books, to explore #SVComicCon and take in everything it had to offer.

“We saw Stan Lee, Christopher Lloyd, John Heder, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Nichelle Nichols, and William Shatner,” said Jonathan, “but I really enjoyed being able to talk to the creators like Google Spotlight Stories…and experience virtual reality with a cardboard box. That’s just one example of the great people exhibiting there.”

“I got to ask William Shatner a question,” said James.

“Yeah, and the crowd cheered when you asked it,” said Jonathan, “they even high-fived you when you walked back to your seat.”

“People liked learning about Geek Club Books too,” Jonathan shared. “They liked learning about our autism community and how we encourage embracing our differences instead of hiding who we are. It’s easy to find acceptance at a Comic Con because you just feel safe to be yourself.”

James agreed. “A Comic Con is the only type of place in the world where you can meet anyone, any number of things, all in one day. There’s absolutely no limit to it. It’s a renaissance fair for the imagination. At this Silicon Valley Comic Con, I was interviewed by April O’Neil, shook hands with Thor and got chewed out by Deadpool.”

“I’m amazed by the gambles that people are willing to take with their ideas and how we can all, in the end, come together to somehow inspire and amaze one another with what we can do. All of us.”

So, I ask you, why can’t the world be more like a Comic Con?
