Isaac Roman says that, as a young man, he grew up with no friends. All alone he sought help from a trusted mentor who encouraged him to develop his love of writing, ideas, and characters, all “warped into one big fantasy world.” When he turned 18, he channeled his dreams and creativity into his first self-published novel, Alpha Spirits: Unlocking Forbidden Ancient Knowledge for a Price.
Tell us about your book, Alpha Spirits.
Daniel Twist, a young boy in Indiana, bids farewell to his father and older brothers who go off to military training. While under the care of his guardian, he starts to hear strange noises up in the attic and, like any other curious kid, he investigates what is making that racket. Unexpectedly, he finds a secret room with an old ornate box on a table. Not heeding the warning on a note attached to the box, he unintentionally unleashes ancient evil spirits. Now he must become a “spirit tamer” in order to save the world.
What inspired you to write it?
My mentor heard of my ideas from the thoughts of my dreams and had me write them down. During our sessions together, she wanted me to start writing them in a sentence. Then the writing became a short story. I wanted to turn it into a book so she encouraged me to add more details, action, and character development. Sadly, she said it was time to move on so I waited five years to resume my writing once I turned eighteen. I have been writing ever since completing nine manuscripts and one published story. My goal is to continue writing one story each year from now on.
How does being autistic influence your writing?
Autism influences my writing by helping me in my creativity. I suppose it is because I have an interest in paranormal along with symbolism that inspires me to create my own worlds. Already I have taken notes through school (doodles to clarify) of what world I need to create. Also, if you meet me, you will know I never leave my laptop behind.
Who is your ideal reader?
I want my audience to be young adult readers that get a thrill reading about magic, summoning, deities, good vs. evil and family. There will be multiple series of books I will make so what I expect readers to receive is inspiration towards different protagonists.
What message do you want your readers to take away after reading the book?
I would say my message for my readers is that all heroes come together to finally put an end to the darkness. For all light within their hearts could never be blotted out even by a never ending cycle of evil.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I’m looking for honest critique, more importantly wanting to be well known in the world for my stories. I want people to enjoy reading my books as much as I love writing them.
Do you have a proud moment to share?
The proud moment that made me cry in joy was receiving my first copyright certificate from the Library of Congress.
What words of encouragement can you offer to other autistic creatives?
Don’t let other people define you. Your ideas, your own work, creativity and goals are like a seed. You first have to nurture it, water it with the sweat of your hard work and the sun shine from those that encourage you. Do not let the winds of discouragement keep you from growing. One day your idea will blossom into something many people can enjoy.
