Autistic Strength - Just Me (Sam's Song)

So many people outside the autism community underestimate autistic strength. Not Steve O’Connor! He is a singer/songwriter from Liverpool who wrote a song whose lyrics speak to the strengths of autism. ‘Just Me (Sam’s Song)’ was inspired by Samantha, or ‘Sam’ as she likes to be called, a young autistic woman who is defying every stereotype.

When Sam was a child, her parents were told they may have to learn sign language saying their daughter would most likely be unable to communicate through speech. But Steve says,

“She is so good at communication! She sings, paints, writes…and the more I’ve gotten to know her, the more I was taken in by her sheer determination to achieve.”

“Sam has fantastic support from her parents,” Steve continues. “Both she and her brother (who is also on the autism spectrum) keep growing, learning and improving. Isn’t that what we all do on our life’s journey?”

‘Just Me (Sam’s Song)’ is an accolade to Sam and her autistic strength. Steve believes that there is no end to what she will be able to achieve.

It is Steve’s hope that his music and lyrics help to break down the barriers, misconceptions and ignorance that surrounds autism. “I hope that this song speaks for those who sometimes cannot speak for themselves. This is their song, their voice.”

I am not a stranger, I herald each sunrise,
Steady as a mountain that sits perfectly still
If I could be a rainbow I’d colour the greyest skies
But when you look, what do you see
Don’t be fooled it’s only me, just me

Stronger than the starlight from heavenly distance shines
Softer than a rain cloud that gives gently its rain
Don’t worry of the thunder it’s only my beating heart
But when you look, who could it be
Don’t be afraid it’s only me, just me

I could be a beacon bright where darker waters flow
Or just like a dancer in the spotlight
I could be a soothing breeze where troubled winds may blow

I am not a stranger, I herald each sunrise,
Steady as a mountain that sits perfectly still
If I could be a rainbow I’d colour the greyest skies
But when you look what do you see
Don’t be fooled it’s only me, just me
