Expressing Life Experiences through the Gift of Poetic Thought
Description

Poetry by Steven R. Burton

Steven R. Burton from Bradford, Yorkshire loves creative writing, music, traveling and making friends. He says he is both an out-going person and a bit quiet and shy. His greatest form of expression is through his poetry where he writes about his life experiences, mental health, and an addiction to gambling.

Communication comes in many forms—and poetry allows the poet to tell their story in a creative and compelling way. We as the readers must slow down to feel each precious word the poet has chosen to convey their message. Poetry can help us feel our emotions, move us to action, and have compassion and empathy for others.

You’ll find his ever-growing collection of poetry and short stories on his Instagram @my_sanctuary_thoughts – Here is a sampling of his work:

An English Home

“This is about my fantasy home in England.”

As I gaze upon the meadows
It takes me back to a time
When we had the whole world
And I’d take your hand in mine

As I walk through
The golden fields
It would take me back
When I’d give you the keys

The keys to unlock my heart
And even when it turns cold
Like autumn leaves fall
I’d have you to hold

At the end of a glorious day
I see in front of me
A tall oak tree
With our names carved with truth

As I walk ferver
I come across an English home
Where ivy grows
And it is where I lay my soul

Venomous Love

“Venomous Love is about loving someone but doesn’t get loved back.”

As I drag myself through the dirt
My promises are like your regrets
But I’m not sure if I should
Let go or get hurt

I will never be disheartened
But I’m not sure what this burning is
Cos your words will always cut me
And my love for you, it will bleed

And as we separate
You still insist that one day
We might bet back together
But it’s too late

I’ll still hold onto my promise I gave
But I know that you still have your regrets
Cos your venomous love
It was intended for me

Hard to Believe

“Hard to Believe is about domestic abuse based on my sister’s experiences.”

It’s hard to believe
After all these years
You turned your back
And left me in tears

In this heart of mine
You will never keep
With my eyes closed shut
All I have left, are long forgotten memories

You choose a life
That played with my mind
You used my good nature
To feed your pride

Don’t judge me
For what I’ve done
Just be there
And hold me together as one

For all these times
I’ve done you no wrong
For all the sacrifice
You got up and ran

The best part of me
You will never see
Because I will be strong
As I move along
