To address the challenges faced by those with lower limb disadvantages, Chronus Robotics, a company based in Lithuania, has developed a self-balancing mobility robot named Kim-e. This innovative device is designed to enhance freedom and visibility for its users, drawing inspiration from the use of wheelchairs in motorsport, where even highly technologically advanced teams rely on manual wheelchairs.

Kim-e is a Segway-like wheelchair that offers a more visible and comfortable way for people with disabilities to navigate their surroundings. The creation of Kim-e was motivated by the observation of manual wheelchair use in motorsport environments, leading to a decade-long project that culminated in the development of this personal mobility robot. This device aims to enable individuals to communicate freely and work with dignity, embodying a significant leap forward in mobility solutions for those with disabilities.

The design of Kim-e sets it apart from traditional wheelchairs, emphasizing visibility for the user while minimizing the presence of the wheelchair and the disability. With its sleek, ergonomic design, Kim-e supports the user’s legs and back, allowing for comfortable travel at speeds up to 12 mph and the ability to change positions from elevated to sitting. The device is hands-free, controlled by upper body movements, and powered by a lithium battery capable of covering up to 19 miles on a full charge. Additionally, Kim-e’s foldable design enhances its portability, making it an innovative solution in the realm of personal mobility devices.

However, pricing information for the Kim-e has not been announced yet, which makes it challenging to compare its cost-effectiveness directly with other products in the market. Prospective buyers can sign up for test rides, indicating that the product is in an advanced stage of development and possibly nearing commercial availability​.
