Autistic blogger Sarah Nannery

Sarah Nannery blogs about Autism, Asperger’s, life, love, books, and parenthood, all from the lens of a woman on the spectrum.

Your blog:

Quirky & Bright

Your City, Country:

Inspiration for Writing a Blog:

I was looking for others with similar experiences to my own, to learn from and exchange ideas. What I found were very few #ActuallyAutistic voices, and a whole lot of neurotypical people talking about their Autistic kids. I knew that there must be other adults, and other women, parents, and professionals with ASD, who were going through some of the same struggles I was, so I decided to start blogging about my experiences in the hope that others might read and relate to what I was saying and find something useful for their own lives.

Intention or Mission of Your Blog:

My intention is to add one more authentic voice to the mainstream conversation, to continue to help dispel myths and fear and miscommunication around Autism, and to offer comfort and common ground for people going through their own versions of neurodiversity.

Topics you Write About:

I post 1-3 times per month on:

  • Memories about what it was like to grow up with Autism (#MemoryLane #Childhood);
  • Personal experiences and tools for being a parent with Autism to a child with Autism (#Parenting);
  • Insider perspectives of what it means to be an adult with Autism (#ASDinsider);
  • Specific tools for improving and interpreting interpersonal communication with ASD (#Communication);
  • Personal reviews and insights about Autism resources, books, websites, and articles (#Resources); and Insights and facts related to various myths that still exist about Autism in mainstream discourse (#MythBusters)

A Memory and Proud Moment:

After a few weeks of blogging, a mother reached out to me on Instagram to let me know that reading my blog has helped her to understand what her daughter with ASD is going through. She felt more equipped to react to her daughter with compassion and tools, as opposed to confusion or anger. That was exactly the kind of thing that I was hoping would happen when I started sharing my own experiences!

Learning about the concept of “taking off the mask” and my experiment with taking my mask off momentarily and how that felt.

ASD and Empathy

Addresses the misinformed ideas that people with autism have no empathy and that lack of empathy is one of the defining traits of the ASD brain. It’s simply not true.

What People Will Take Away After Reading Your Blog:

I hope people will take away the feeling that we are all in this together. That we all experience our own forms of neurodiversity, and that the label of Autism is just that – a label – and that it is not the be-all-end-all of any person’s existence. We all struggle with similar things all through our lives, and we all have developed our own tools and coping mechanisms to be successful.
