Google Empowers Deaf Community Through AI-Powered Sign Language Recognition

Google organized a competition to develop AI technology that can decode sign language in real time, specifically focusing on American Sign Language (ASL). The objective is to assist hearing parents of deaf babies in learning ASL by providing real-time feedback and teaching them ASL words. Google also created a separate competition to translate finger-spelled ASL words into English text, aiming to improve sign language recognition technology and make it accessible to non-verbal individuals.

To address the challenges faced by the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, Google has developed the PopSign app in partnership with academic institutions.
