Remember the inexpensive portable Braille printer made from Lego blocks Braigo? invented by a then 12 year old Shubham Banerjee, it created quite a lot of noise in the technology world! Braigo Labs, the company founded by Shubham, has come up with another neat invention that can be quite beneficial for blind people.
Braigo Platform, a free web application, extracts text from images and gives blind people the ability to access and read them. Braigo Platform can extract text from various sources – whether on the computer or phone, and is pretty quick in generating text from images. The web application, which can be accessed here, is free, and extracts text in 50 languages.
This technology is definitely a step in the right direction, primarily because there are lots of websites that don’t use a simple “alt” tag for photos so screen readers could read them.
Try the application and see what you think. It does a pretty decent job of differentiating between text and graphical objects, and extracts just the text and displays them in the browser or allows the user to print it.
